About NetKar, i don't know, but rFactor community is and was mostly always full... When not online, people driving offline... The rFactor leagues have big sponsors, full grids, tight racing, how this is "empty"?
iRacing, even not being so realistic and having flaws on its physics, its a simulator... More simulator than the other games you citated, so its a sim still...
12 when racing inside a pack, to be more exact...
BL1, FBM/XFG/XRG, im competitive (1:14/34 average lap) and the only crashs are racing incidents...
Having a bad PC doesn't changes nothing for who races against me...
Well, first, sim racers and gamers are a very different people... Gamers just want to win, get points, collect status, like most of the actual LFS players. Sim Racers are race fans who want to race, respecting the rules and etc, uncare about statuses, "rt", and these things... Also forgetting the fact what gamers play all games, racers play only simulators.
Second, why only have people with high end PC's racing would improve anything? There is no relationship between finnancial status and driving hability...
I personally don't hate cruisers or drifters, i was a cruiser 2 years ago and also tried to learn drift, i like all styles from driving...
The problem itself, like your post says, its LFS community is basicly made mostly from drifters and cruisers...
Racers are going away to C.A.R.S., rF2, GTR, iRacing, and racing is becoming extinct... Where still exists races, its something artificial, people just driving to get more !ex or !rt, or crazy races at South City what starts with 15 cars and finishs with 5...
About that wouldn't help LFS in a short period, is a big truth... The second part, "they don't want to race", its exactly the problem... Why you buy a racing simulator of not for racing? This can create a problem, like on Brazil, where most of the people here know LFS as a drifting simulator with stupid mods...
This makes a bad reputation for real racers and sim racers (there is a famous post here in LFS forum what represents it: "LFS: Racing, cruising, drifting, stunt and Cocking About simulator"), that can easily explain why most S2 servers are empty today while F1 2011, rFactor and other sims communities increase...
To me, i think the best solution would be to if remove cruising and drifting, do it when S3 come, so will be fair with cruisers/drifters and would guarantee new racers coming...
Well, to be honest, the demo account problem is a big paradox...
Simply remove the demo users or say them "buy or go away" is not the best solution, there are a lot of good drivers that can't buy a S2 account (was my case), would be a big loss from great racers (some probably better than most of the S2 drivers)... But in the reverse side, like John5200 said, the demo servers are part of what makes the S2 servers empty...
Its something to think...

Think about it: 40% of the players from LFS just buyed to keep driving road cars at 60 km/h.
Most of the racing servers are mostly empty, except the Cargame servers (when you can't race if you are slow because most of the others slow (and some of the fast) drivers also don't how to race)...
If you were a sim racer, wanted another sim to buy, would you buy a sim where 40% of the "racers" are just driving slowly in race tracks with no barriers, and the other 60% rarely races, needs an automatic system to protect them from crashs, but still crashes?
Cruise servers doesn't are a problem to us who play LFS, but is something what can avoid a lot of potential (good) racers to come...
It will be a problem to the kb/mouse users... I dont think there will be any need to change anything to make the game better or worst to mouse drivers...
Well, i hate the AIRIO yellow flag system, because it only shows a message "HUGE CRASH AHEAD!!!!!!" when you already are seeing a "YELLOW FLAG" message from LFS...
The biggest problem, i think, its what in LFS people don't see it as a real racing, but as a simple game...
They just want to win, and forget about racing things...
Some examples i saw while racing:
-Forcing a 3 wide on South city
-Trying to pass someone with damaged car on a corner (SO too)
-Forcing over someone with low car control on a tight corner
Normally, when i was demo user and faster than half of the grid, i never had problems with newbie drivers (drivers from 0,5 to 5s slower), but in the S2 servers i had several problems with the others touching me because im slower...
My suggestion would be a option to deactivate the player option to spectate, allowing only to the admins to do it, like in real life, when if someone crashs, the drivers behind need to avoid it (or wait in case of a big one), and a safety truck comes to take the car out from the track...
Obviously, that would only work for leagues... Anyway, its cool...
